It's A Jungle Out There! |
2 May - 8 May 2000 |
....Our first port of call was a place called Barrow creek with a population of about 5 people, 2 dogs, a cat and some chickens. Oddly enough, if you look closely on a map of Australia, this place will be shown. I believe the primary reason for this is the fact that it holds the oldest telegraph station in all of Australia. We had a look around the station but sadly couldn't actually get in the building.
From there, we drove on to a place called the Devils Marbles, where we saw exactly this - large marble shaped rocks I had never seen the like of before. We continued on to Tennant Creek where we refuelled. I took over the driving and drove the rest of the way to Daly Waters 407 km away. There is only one place one should stay in Daly to get the proper experience, this being the "Daly Waters Pub". Unfortunately, it was fully booked out just some hours before, so we had to seek alternate accomodation - which we luckily found in the form of the "Highway Inn". Accomodation being found, we set down our things and headed back to the Daly Pub and had a few drinks with the locals.
On Sunday we made our way to Katherine Gorge and Batchelor, where we stayed the night. Katherine was absolutely spectacular and the weather continued to be lovely as it had been the few days previous.
Our final day on the road we spent visiting Litchfield National Park. We would have gone to Kakadu National Park, Australia's largest national park, but due to a particularily harsh wet season, a lot of the roads were still damaged. Litchfield was stunning and we saw some amazing magnetic termite mounds, beautiful rock pools and breathtaking waterfalls. Our last stop before hitting Darwin was a crocodile farm just outside of the city. There we were lucky enough to watch the prehestoric lizards being fed - a sight indeed.(My apologies for the lack of photographs in this section, but when one of my films came back from the developers I found it had been destroyed.)
